Volunteer with Rooting DC

A great way for students to connect to the local DC urban agriculture scene.

Rooting DC, the District's own annual urban gardening conference, is just a few weeks away and we need your help in making this year's event a success. Rooting DC has always been totally volunteer-run, so we're able to keep it free for all. We're currently looking for volunteers to help out during the event. This is a really great way to get to know the urban agricultural community here in DC. Check out the program from last year's Rooting DC if you're unfamiliar with the forum.

Rooting DC will be held Saturday, February 18, 2012 from 9:30 am - 4:00 pm

There are several ways you can help. See a description of the volunteer areas below and complete our Rooting DC Volunteer Form if you wish to help out this year!
  • Friday afternoon set-up (2/17/12 after 4 pm): Carry tables & chairs indoors. Make & hang posterboard signs. Set up tables in the gym with signs for all the organizations/vendors. Carry supplies into the building & distribute around building as needed.
  • Info Fair team (7:30am-9:00am) Last minute setup tasks as needed. Greet organizations & help them find their assigned table. Assist in carrying organization tablers’ stuff inside as needed. Set up water stations and start volunteer coffee station.
  • Registration team (8:30-10:30; 10:30 - Noon) Check in attendees, speakers, organizations, etc. Distribute programs, name badges, evaluation sheets, golf pencils, etc. Collect donations!
  • Food team (will miss 2nd session: noon-2:15): Setup lunch in the cafeteria. Collect & sort recycling/compost/trash during lunch. Collect money and distribute lunches. Basic cleanup of cafeteria after lunch.
  • Speaker guide/AV team (all day; arrive by 9:30am) One person will be assigned to each presentation room to greet speakers, make sure all AV needs are met (find A/V guy when help is needed), fill pitchers of water/cups available, etc. Ensure attendees complete evaluation form.
  • Cleanup crew (3:00-5:30): Check on trash/compost/recycling situation throughout the day. Clean up each room at the end of the day. Carry all Rooting DC’s supplies out to vehicles as we finish up with them.
  • Attendee guides (Shifts all day): Walking around the building answering general questions, help everyone find their sessions, bathrooms, etc.
  • Skilled Volunteers (all day) We need skilled volunteers for video taping, editing and production, photography and more. All skilled volunteers must arrive by 9:00am and have their own equipment.
Thanks and we hope to make Rooting DC a success!
